Singing and Whistling

By: Peg S. Councill

I will whistle for them and gather them together,
For I have redeemed them;
And they will be as numerous as they were before.
(Zechariah 10:8 NKJ)

The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.
(Zephaniah 3:17 ESV)

As I was reading these two passages, I was so blessed by the idea of God whistling for me and singing over me. These are concepts I had never considered before. I was amazed at the thought that God would actually whistle for us, His people. When I looked it up, it described the whistling as a shepherd whistles for His sheep. God not only whistles for us but sings over us.

Singing is where real joy comes for me. I am most joyful when I am singing. I can be in the worst kind of mood, but when I put on music and start singing, it changes everything, inside and out. Just think on that for a moment. If singing blesses me so much, imagine how awesome it is to have God be the one who is doing that singing. What a beautiful truth this is, God sings over us, His children. He rejoices over us with gladness. He quiets us with His love.
Everything we learn about God must come from God Himself. He declares who He is to us, no one else can define Him. We see this clearly in the following Scripture, as God declares Himself to Moses.

 Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in faithfulness and truth.
(Exodus 34:6 NASB)

This is my go-to verse in times of doubt and stress, as I wonder “God, what are you doing here?” Then I remember this verse, telling me what God says about Himself. This is what quiets me in His love, brings me the peace that passes understanding. The circumstances may not change, but my perspective and focus do.
