“Listen to Me, you who pursue righteousness, who seek the Lord:
Look to the rock from which you were cut,
And to the quarry from which you were dug.
(Psalm 51:1)
Listen to Me, Look to Me, Seek Me! God has been calling to us since the beginning of time. We know from Scripture that Adam was formed out of the clay of the ground and Eve was formed out of Adam’s rib. Humans were not some freak accidents of nature, we were planned. Psalm 139 puts it this way:
13 For You created my innermost parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb.
14 I will give thanks to You, because I am awesomely and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret,
And skillfully formed in the depths of the earth;
16 Your eyes have seen my formless substance; and in Your book were written
All the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them.
(Psalm 139:13-16 NASB)
‘God spoke all the rest of creation into existence, but He formed Adam out of clay using His own hands.
“Then God said, “Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness.” (Genesis 1:26a)
“A chip off the old block” O, how I would love to hear that said of me with regards to God. Imagine God choosing your personality with His purpose in mind. The touch of God; fashioned by His own hand, not spoken into existence like everything else, but formed. The word ‘ordained’ means “To plan, pre-ordain, purpose. To form or fashion or frame.” God planned us, formed us, touched us; He has good plans for each one of us, “plans to give us a future and a hope.” (Jer. 29:11) That seems much more intimate to me than simply speaking something into existence. Great care was taken with each one of us. We are unique and intricately fashioned. It was a careful crafting, uniquely our own, detailed and beautiful in the sight of God. We were not made in molds but in the actual hands of God.
Let’s look back at our main Scripture.
“Listen to Me, you who pursue righteousness, who seek the Lord:
Look to the rock from which you were cut,
And to the quarry from which you were dug.
(Psalm 51:1)
We see that we are to look to our God, the Rock from which we were cut. We go astray when we want to have our own way, when we look to ourselves. Or as is foolishly sung in so many sappy songs, “listen to your heart.” Yet our hearts can deceive us, God never will. Yield the life He gave you back to Him.
