13 Then Jesus *arrived from Galilee at the Jordan, coming to John to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have the need to be baptized by You, and yet You are coming to me?” 15 But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he *allowed Him. 16 After He was baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and settling on Him, 17 and behold, a voice from the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:13-17 NASB)
What would we do if Jesus came to us to be baptized? Would we object as John did? Even after Christ’s explanation, would we refuse? No wonder John exclaimed,
“It is I who should be baptized by You,
and yet you are coming to me!”
Truly God, your ways are not our ways, Your thoughts are not our thoughts. You do things so often that we do not expect. But we can trust Your leading in all these things. Even when we do not understand, guide us to trust you and to lean on You to guide us through and bring us deeper into our relationship with You. Help us to submit, as John did, to Your leading, even when we cannot see the “Why?” in it.
We need you for our very breath, we need You to show us the next step. We need you to increase our faith and help us trust You every step of the way. Jesus we simply need You. Help us to know how to decrease, so that You increase in us.
28 You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent ahead of Him.’ 29 He who has the bride is the groom; but the friend of the groom, who stands and listens to him, rejoices greatly because of the groom’s voice. So, this joy of mine has been made full. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease. (John 3:28-30)
