4 And the man said to me, “Son of man, look with your eyes, and hear with your ears, and set your heart upon all that I shall show you, for you were brought here in order that I might show it to you. Declare all that you see to the house of Israel.” (Ezekiel 40:4 ESV)
Walking with God requires time and silence; a good listening ear and a heart ready to do whatever God reveals in those times. God’s Word instructs Ezekiel in the Verse above to do four things:
- Look with your eyes
- Hear with your ears
- Set your heart upon all that I shall show you
- Declare all that you see.
Jesus instructed us to do this often by saying,
“He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”
These words are recoded several times in the synoptic gospels.
(Matthew 11:9, 13:9, 13:43, Mark 4:9, Luke 8:8 NKJV)
James instructs us:
19 You know this, my beloved brothers and sisters. Now everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; 20 for a man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness of God.
(James 1:19-20 NASB)
It has taken me a long time to learn not to jump up too quickly and run full speed ahead as I seek to share what the Lord reveals to me in those times of quiet. I feel like God is instructing me as His child saying:
“Look at me, listen to me. I’m not done talking yet, Shhhh! Linger longer here and listen to my full instructions before you run headlong into your day.”
I am naturally an early riser, but I just started a new job that requires me to be at work by 6:30! I have to get up at about four in the morning if I want to still have time with God before I leave. When I mentioned this to Cody’s new wonderful father-in-law, Greg, He smiled and told me. “Well, He’s up!” I was so taken back and blessed by that simple truth. God is up all the time. He is there for me to meet with anytime I take the time to meet with Him.
I believe God whispered to me in one of these early morning silent times. He spoke to me who I was, what my call is. and I am determined by His grace to walk that out. I have only told my husband, and I will never tell anyone else, because God wants me silent about it. He just wants me to know who I am and do that. Just to sit and listen to Him, to follow that list above from Ezekiel.
Look with your eyes
Hear with your ears
Set your heart upon all that I shall show you
Declare all that you see.
Is God speaking to you this morning? Is He saying to You, “Know who you are in Me and DO THAT!” I was set free from spiritual burnout and over-doing by one passage of Scripture.
10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
(Ephesians 2:10 NASB)
God has prepared works for us to walk in beforehand. The light went on as I looked at my full plate of five different ministries and just cried out,
“God what should be on my plate and what needs to go?”
I am now walking in and doing only what I sense is a work prepared beforehand for me to do. I am knowing God, knowing who I am and doing that.
That’s it! May the Lord simplify our lives down to that. It is so Freeing.
Know who you are and DO THAT!
As one of your songs from the past says “Linger a little bit longer at His feet”
