The Smallest taste of Heaven

By: Carole L. Haines

Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
(John 8:12)

When I was a teenager, I had a room that would fill with afternoon light. It was a smallish room, but it had three gigantic windows. The two front windows faced the street, but the side window overlooked our driveway and was flanked by huge pine trees which provided privacy between the houses.  We lived about 2 miles from our high school, so I walked to and from school. It was a tiring walk home, a lot of uphill. I would get in the door, go upstairs to my room, toss the backpack onto the chair and collapse on the bed. Sinking my head deep into the pillow, I would position myself so that my whole face was soaking in the sunshine pouring through window.

I would just lay there and close my eyes. I was seeing a glowing red, almost as if the sun was revealing the blood within the vessels of my eyelids. I can close my eyes even now and feel that saturating warmth. It was so wonderful. Perhaps that is why I love the fact that Jesus is called the Light of the World.

While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.” (John 9:12)

There is a warmth that comes with light that is so embracing, so comforting.  I picture Jesus as the light of the world and just lay there and soak in the warmth of His Presence, His promised and cherished presence. Not praying and asking for things, not pouring out my heart of worry or fear. Just sitting with Jesus, The Light of the World, and enjoying His company. I bet that is just the smallest taste of Heaven.
