By the rivers of Babylon,
There we sat down and wept,
When we remembered Zion.
2 Upon the [a]willows in the midst of it
We hung our [b]harps.
3 For there our captors [c]demanded of us [d]songs,
And our tormentors mirth, saying,
“Sing us one of the songs of Zion.”
4 How can we sing the Lord’s song
In a foreign land?
I was so struck by the mournful tone of this psalm. Captivity is such a terrible thing for anyone. And to think that the captors would demand that the captives sing and “entertain the enemy troops.”
By the rivers of Babylon, There we sat down and wept, When we remembered Zion.
Babylon has generally represented sin and worldly indulgences throughout the Bible. The Rivers of Babylon, I believe, represent the deceitfulness of sin. Sin promises pleasures and satisfaction. It shows us sparkling river, but the waters are poisoned with death and destruction. Of course we sit down and weep there, when we remember Zion, the City of God, the Kingdom of God. But thank God, that with Him there is Grace and restoration.
- Isaiah 30:18
[ God Is Gracious and Just ] Therefore the Lord longs to be gracious to you, And therefore He waits on high to have compassion on you. For the Lord is a God of justice; How blessed are all those who long for Him.
Upon the willows, we hung up our harps -disobedience leads to a lack of joy, a lack of inner peace. The Holy Spirit is kindly knocking at our door, asking us to let Him in, so He can bring us to repentance and restoration. Will we answer the door, so we can sing again.
O beautiful child of God, if there is something in your life that is not right with the Lord, come to Him this moment and confess. If you have stepped into Babylonian territory and now find yourself captive, there, look up to God, and He will rescue you and restore you. “the Kindness of God, leads you to repentance.” God desires your wholeness, your healing, your restoration. Joy unspeakable awaits the one who admits where he/she has failed and turns to our precious God for forgiveness. Someone out there needed to hear this today. Yield to the kind, tenderhearted call of God to “Return to Him.” He loves you so.
