Pass the torch

boy is baptized into JWs

As I was singing on the Worship Team at my church yesterday, I was blessed by seeing, up close and personal, three precious people baptized into the Body of Christ.  One was a beautiful young mother who had recently come to Christ, she was there with her young daughter.  The other two were young, spry gentleman, about to enter the turbulent teen years of life.  I was closer to the baptistery than ever before, since I happened to be singing that morning, so  I could see their faces.  O, how they glowed.  The young mother spoke with such joy, and the two young men, with such conviction.  I was truly blessed.  I was especially intrigued by the passage of Scripture chosen by one of the young men.

Psalm 25:1-7

To You, O Lord, I lift up my soul. O my God, in You I trust, Do not let me be ashamed; Do not let my enemies exult over me. Indeed, none of those who wait for You will be ashamed; Those who deal treacherously without cause will be ashamed.

Make me know Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; For You I wait all the day. Remember, O Lord, Your compassion and Your lovingkindnesses, For they have been from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; According to Your lovingkindness remember me, For Your goodness’ sake, O Lord.

I looked at his young face  while he was asked if he believed.  He was absolutely sure, I could tell by how he said it.  What a precious prayer to bring to the Lord at the moment of baptism.  He was asking God to protect him, to teach him, to lead him.  He was declaring God to be the God of his Salvation.  It reminded me of my own desires as a young person, to truly follow and be led.  Not much in my life has turned out the way I envisioned the day I was baptized, and so boldly claimed God as the God of my salvation.  But He has been ever with me, and I have been ever with Him. He has led me, taught me and protected me.  He has grown me up in Christ.  Though my world threatened to spin out of control many times, I was always clinging to the One who is in control.  He is faithful; yesterday, Today, and forever.  He has led me, He will lead my children and on to the coming generations.  So we rejoice to pass the torch, to light the way for those coming up behind us.

Thank You Lord Jesus, Holy Father, Precious Spirit, for your ever-present, faithful, and unchanging ways.  You are our constant, in a life that is so transient.  We love You, dear God
