20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Cor. 5)
Jesus Knew no sin. He didn’t have it in him at all. He was pure and spotless, He was perfect. The word “knew” here means to recognize, to know intimately, like a husband knows his wife. He was completely innocent of all wrongdoing, and yet here it says that He was made to BE sin on our behalf. Isaiah 53
Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him…
He was cut off out of the land of the living
For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
To whom the stroke was due…that says it all. What we deserved, Christ Himself bore. Notice the different injuries; pierced through, crushed, chastening, scourging, cut off, stricken, smitten by God. And look at all the different kinds of sin each wounding satisfied. All of this was part of an eternal plan. For Ephesians 1 says,
“3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.
Jesus knew we would sin before He even created us. Before the foundation of the world, He decided to adopt us. He knew about the Fall of Mankind. He knew we would cost Him great suffering and shame. He knew all this, but His love was greater than what He knew. Notice it says this was all planned according to the good pleasure of His Will. He made us, we sinned against Him, and He sacrificed Himself to bring us back through the Cross. He died for us, those to whom the stroke was due. O let us sing His praises together, Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ. And if you do not know Him, precious ones, He knows you, and calls you to Himself. He who made you, loves you, wants you, cares for you. Cherished, Precious and wanted, the Cry of Mankind, all of it satisfied in Jesus Christ. Let us bow down before Him and soak in His blessed and Holy Love. Amen and Amen.
