“The spirit of a person is the lamp of the Lord,
Searching all the innermost parts of his being.”
(Proverbs 20:27)
Our next stop for our reflections on our innermost being is found in the Book of Proverbs. The backstory for the author of this Book is so vast and intriguing, I could not possibly even begin to give a synopsis. Suffice it to say that the author is King Solomon, the heir to King David’s throne. He most certainly had humble beginnings because He is the second-born offspring of David and Bathsheba’s torrid relationship. David married Bathsheba, after forcing himself upon her and then murdering her husband. She becomes pregnant but loses the baby soon after birth as a direct result of David’s Sin. (see 2 Samuel 12:14-20) Solomon is their second born child.
One of the aspects of God’s character is long-suffering and patience. His merciful kindness toward us in wanting to rescue us from sin, forgive and restore us. There is an obscure verse from 2 Samuel 14:14, that emphasizes this aspect of God.
“All of us must die eventually. Our lives are like water spilled out on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God does not just sweep life away; instead, he devises ways to bring us back when we have been separated from him.”
We are all mortal and life is fleeting, yet God makes plans for us, even when we have rebelled or fallen away. He devises ways to bring us back. He seeks us, like Jesus sought the Lost sheep (Luke 15;3-7).
Our God speaks of finding us in our darkness, He is with us even there. calling us into His light. (Psalm 139:11-12).
His Word lights our path. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
(Psalm 119:105)
Jesus is called the Light of the world:
“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
(John 8:12 NLT)
“The Word made flesh (Jesus) gave life to every man, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” (John 1:4-5 NLT)
But each person must choose or reject Jesus for themselves because God offers us that choice. His love is our Lamp lighting the way to Him. God’s word tells us that it is His kindness that leads us to repentance. (Romans 2:4) What a Beautiful God we serve.
“But You are a God of forgiveness, Gracious and compassionate,
Slow to anger and abounding in mercy; And You did not abandon them.”
(Nehemiah 9:17b)
God searches our innermost beings; He desires to set us free from anything holding us back from relationship with Himself. He is our God, and He reaches into us with His light and love seeking to bring us closer, nearer, and deeper into our walks with Him.
Yield to the light of God’s lamp as He searches you and draws you.
Yield to the light as it exposes any darkness.
Yield to the light as He shows you the way in which you should walk.
“The spirit of a person is the lamp of the Lord,
Searching all the innermost parts of his being.”
(Proverbs 20:27)
