Innermost being: Rivers of Living waters

BNH

by: Carole L. Haines

“The one who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” (John 7:38)

Have you ever gotten a lesson in yourself? Yeah! I have been getting a big dose of myself lately. It’s hard when God’s peels back the veneer and we begin to see glimpses of ourselves from outside ourselves, as others see us. Ouch, the process of transformation is not easy, and it is certainly not pretty. I definitely believe in Jesus and want Rivers of Living Water flowing from my innermost being. But woah, this is going to take some serious work. I have come so far but still have just as far to go.
Yet Jesus is worthy of the journey, His love is worth the blood sweat and tears. He certainly thought we were worth the journey He took to the Cross. As an introvert, it has taken me awhile to realize just how much my change will be good for everyone who happens to encounter me. I used to seek change for the glory of the Lord, and then I was seeking it for my own sanity. But now, I see it is a wholly rounded transformation that affects every part of my life, and the lives of those I love, work with, and encounter daily.

My call is to believe Jesus, to receive Him and yield to the work of the Holy Spirit in every area of my life, nothing held back. God’s Word prays it best:

“Search me, God, and know my heart;
Put me to the test and know my anxious thoughts;
And see if there is any hurtful way in me,
And lead me in the everlasting way.” (Psalm 139:23-24)

Lord, I desperately need Your power for change. First I need the holy desire to change and then the power to come through to the end. Your Word tells me that it is You who are working in me both TO WILL and TO DO according to Your good pleasure. (Philippians 2:13). So have Your way with me, Dear God. May Mighty Rivers of Living Water pour in and through me, all for Your Glory. Amen!

  1. You’re in good company, Carole. I was relieved when I once heard a teacher at church say that our transformation to be more like Christ takes our lifetime. But, as you pointed out, it’s worth the journey and work because we really want to be like Him.
