I am so drawn to water, not to swim in it, but just to be near it, to listen to its varied sounds. Whether it is waves crashing on the shore, the trickle of a stream, or the Roar of a raging waterfall; I love it all. The soothing sounds, the mist blown into my face, the feel of it as it enwraps my feet and cools me on a Summer’s Day. God’s voice is compared to the Cascading of Waters in Revelation 1.
“12 I turned to see whose voice it was that spoke to me. When I turned, I saw seven gold lampstands, 13 and among the lampstands was One like the Son of Man, dressed in a long robe and with a gold sash wrapped around His chest. 14 His head and hair were white like wool—white as snow—and His eyes like a fiery flame. 15 His feet were like fine bronze as it is fired in a furnace, and His voice like the sound of cascading waters.” (Revelation 1:12-15 HCSB)
It seems I am drawn to the water because I am drawn to the voice of God, and the waters remind me of His Voice. There are so many references in Scripture that associate God with the Waters in their many forms.
1 Ascribe to Yahweh, you heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to Yahweh the glory due His name, worship Yahweh
in the splendor of His holiness.
3 The voice of the Lord is above the waters. The God of glory thunders—
the Lord, above vast waters,
4 the voice of the Lord in power, the voice of the Lord in splendor. (Psalm 29:1-4)
And in Ezekiel 43:2
“I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice sounded like the roar of mighty waters, and the earth shone with His glory.”
Just as interesting as God’s voice sounding like the rush of waters, Jesus promises that whoever believes in Him, out of their innermost being shall flow Rivers of Living Water. This is found in John 7:38.
Our voices amassed together in praise are said to sound like that same cascading of waters in the following Scripture.
Then I heard something like the voice of a vast multitude, like the sound of cascading waters, and like the rumbling of loud thunder, saying: Hallelujah, because our Lord God, the Almighty, has begun to reign! (Revelation 19:6)
As we are transformed into the Image of Christ and perfected in Heaven, we will sound as a beautiful waterfall together in unity, praising our God, rejoicing in His reign, delighting in His presence. How amazing is that?
So, the next time you are drawn to water, whether Ocean, river, lake, stream or waterfall; reflect on the fact that God’s voice is as the cascading of waters and that as we are perfected, we too will have that sound when we praise Him in Perfect unity for all eternity. Have a Blessed Day.
