I hate death.

by: Carole L. Haines

As I sit here writing this, I am looking into the eyes of my elderly dog, who doesn’t have much longer to live. We have had him for 14 years and he has been such a precious little trooper. I lost a cat 3 weeks ago that we had for 10 years, too. I found myself crying while driving down the road and crying out, “God, I hate death, I hate it!” I know it is my grief, but I truly hate the enemy of death. No one wants to die. Death is spiritually unnatural. We were not created to die, it is sin that brought death into the world, Adam and Eve’s sin, and our own, which introduced this heinous reality into God’s beautiful new creation.

Nobody wants to talk about death, but I feel God leading me to do so today. We can find many things in the Bible that are comforting for the Believer about this enemy.

Precious in the sight of the Lord Is the death of His godly ones. (Psalm 116:19)

God cares deeply about our suffering in the death of those we love and in our own deaths.

Jesus Wept at the tomb of Lazarus.

32 So when Mary came to the place where Jesus was, she saw Him and fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled, 34 and He said, “Where have you laid him?” They *said to Him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus wept. 36 So the Jews were saying, “See how He loved him!”
(John 11:32-36)

Jesus died and rose again for us. You’d think that was enough but He also intercedes for us, as does the Holy Spirit of God.

25 Therefore He (Jesus) is also able to save forever those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7:25)

Now in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. (Romans 8:26)

O, yes, I hate death but belonging to Jesus is life itself. When once asked about eternal life, Jesus answered this way:

And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. (John 17, vs 3)

Knowing The only true God, Jesus the Son, through salvation and the work of God’s Holy Spirit, this is Life itself. I don’t know who needed to hear this today, or who of you is struggling with the death of a loved one. Perhaps you are facing death yourself. But with Jesus, we don’t need to fear death. Death holds captive those who don’t know Jesus yet fear it.

14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, so that through death He might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. (Hebrews 2:14-15)

There is only One who can free you from this fear of death that may hold you captive, He is Jesus Christ. Come to Him, confess your need for a savior. Admit you are a sinner and find life in Him. I have walked with Him for almost 50 years, and I find Him to be the greatest joy and my constant, faithful companion. He is freeing me from all that holds me captive. He wants to free you too. So, yes, I hate death, as you do too. But the Love of God conquers death. Come to Him today. He is calling to You to come home to God.
