Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”… “We must carry out the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.” (John 8:12, 9:10)
I never noticed before that Jesus says He is the Light of the World while He is in the world. It made me realize just how important his other statement about being the Light of the World really is.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Your light must shine before people in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)
There’s a whole lot more weight to His Words when we realize that Jesus is passing the baton to us, as His little Lights of the World. It really brought home to me the seriousness of being His ambassador, His representative in this world.
20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin in our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:20)
I think I can sometimes be so busy making sure everyone knows that I know how imperfect I am, and I don’t step up enough, yielding to the need for this great transformation process to happen inside me and pour out through me to the world. I was really struck by the fact that we are His lights every time we open our mouths and tell someone we are a follower of Jesus. Let us yield to the purifying process of God’s transformation process. How bright of a light do we want to be? I want to be a Lighthouse on a dangerous shore, pointing others to the safety of Christ. There is a lot of transformational work that has happened in me, but Wooo, there is so much more that needs to be done. How about You?
Jesus, we yield ourselves to the perfecting process of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We want to be Your Lights in this World of Darkness.
