Hero of the Story

Hero of Their Story

(The Takeaway)

Music and lyrics: Bruce Nevin Haines

Old man is struggling to get up from his seat

Clutches his cap in his hand and stands to his feet

The anthem is played, the banner is raised

The same flag he defended

In his younger days

Looking at him now you could never tell

He has the voice of experience to say that war is hell

While heaven’s gates welcome the saints

The Brothers that fought beside him

The ones he could not save

What cannot be repaired, cannot be remade

To a state of former glory

That Old Man over there came to his Brother’s aid

And he’s the Hero of their story

There’s the take away

You should’ve seen him in his day

Now the words from his story are fading from the page

Looking at old photographs, he can’t recall their names

Those of us who’ve heard him tell the stories before

Owe it to him now to tell them all the more

You should’ve seen him in his day

A state of former glory
