A thick layer of frost

By Carole L. Haines

Watch over your heart with all diligence,
For from it flow the springs of life.

Proverbs 4:23 NASB

I woke this morning to a thick layer of frost blanketing the ground outside. All the world seemed to stiffen within its grip, awaiting the rising of the sun and the heat of the day. Pulling the covers back over my head and scooching closer to my warm husband beside me, I begin to try falling back asleep. But a deep sense of dread seized my heart and I whispered to my Husband that I needed prayer. He woke from his sleep and clasped my hand in his as He prayed for God’s victory and comfort over this looming sense of dread upon my heart.
Unable to rest anymore, I begin to feel the familiar sensation of kitty Kat paws on my mattress. Our three cats were walking around the bed, reminding me with their meows and purrs that it was breakfast time. I arose and dressed, meandering out to the kitchen, dropping a load of laundry into the washer as I pass by. Little meows and gentle leg rubs began to warm me as I prepare their three bowls and sit them down on the floor. With cats now eating happily I turn to the other morning to-do list. Coffee prep was next and then off to the living room for my quiet time with God.
Yet, my heart still yearned for more prayer, a companion to walk with me through this morning as the first light began breaking upon the hills. I clicked on You Tube and searched for the Bible readings to listen to. My troubled heart began to thaw as I sat listening to the Word of God read out loud. There are wonderful channels on YouTube, where you can listen to the Word of God being read. There are prayers you can pray along with when you just can’t seem to find the right words.
I am so grateful that technological advances have provided a way to have the Word of God read over me any time of day or night. It’s a wonderful gift and treasure to wake up to. With the companionship of the Holy Spirit and the powerful calming Words of Scripture being read over me, I soon found my heart softening and yielding its fear to the calming promises of God.

Dear believer, if your heart is feeling a bit frosty, as mine was this morning, put on a channel where the Word of God is being read out loud and settle in for its refreshing flood. It’s a powerful tool and brings joy and light into your room, as surely as the rising sun each day. Have a blessed day in Him and may all frost yield to His warming light upon our hearts, melting us into His capable hands, to be formed and guided as He wills. Amen
