Roots strong enough to break a Rock Wall

I was fascinated by the tree in this picture.  Bruce, Cody and I were engaged in one of our Usual Pursuits, exploring places we have never seen before.  We do this a lot.  We just get in the car, head in a certain direction and find roads or towns we have never been through before, and we explore them.  It’s kind of an unspoken thing on my Bucket List, to drive on every road in Maryland and beyond.  Yesterday, after visiting a Wonderful Car Show, we found ourselves just 10 miles from Harpers Ferry, WV.  This is one of my favorite places in the World, so we went.  The way in was easy, but there was a huge back-up to get back out because of all the Cyclists, Tubers, and Kayakers who frequent this Beautiful place.  So we picked up some free maps at a Visitor Center and found the closest bridge to us, other than the Harper’s Ferry Bridge, that would cross the Potomac.  We set the GPS for Sharpsburg MD and we were off.  It was a stunning back woods drive and the above picture is taken from one of the bridges we crossed.  Here is another:

The ruins of two old Bridges from ages past that have crumbled into the River.  What fascinated me most, was how a single seed fell into the old support of this Bridge and was able to set down roots and grow so strong, that it actually broke the Rock Wall apart, and is flourishing in what was once a Hardened wall made of Mortar and Rock.

And the rocks are broken up by Him.
The Lord is good,
A stronghold in the day of trouble,
And He knows those who take refuge in Him.  (Nahum 1)

We all have hardened places in our lives, places where we have been hurt, wounded, damaged.  But as our Roots grow deeper down into God and who He is, we have the power to break apart those Rock walls and shatter the Mortar.  We can flourish in what was once a hardened, barren, and empty place.  Jesus is our Rock of Salvation, and He tells us that if we have the faith as small as a Mustard seed, we can say to a Mountain “Move,” and it will move.  I believe that, literally, I do.  God’s Word tells us to Pray in Faith, and so we do.  But we must never place expectations on God for how He will answer.  His Ways are above our Ways and His thoughts are above our thoughts.  So really we just Pray believing, and trust the One we are praying to.  Trust only comes with Intimacy, so we must know God’s Character deeply in order to really let go and Trust.

So get to know this precious God of Ours.  Spend much time with Him.  Your Roots wil grow deep, and You will be empowered to shatter the Rock Walls and Mortar that have held you captive for so long.

Psalm 78:14-16 (NASB)

1Then He led them with the cloud by day
And all the night with a light of fire.
15 He split the rocks in the wilderness
And gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths.
16 He brought forth streams also from the rock
And caused waters to run down like rivers.
