Traveling in a plane can give one a breathtaking view of the earth. I was traveling just this morning, staring out the window at the surreal clouds passing beneath me, revealing mere glimpses of the earth beneath. I spotted rivers and streams, trying to guess if one of those was the Mississippi. I was gliding over Mountain ranges so majestic, so expansive; I couldn’t help but smile and grin, almost chuckling at the Beauty of it all. Then, I spotted it, a rainbow in the clouds. Here I was, thousands of feet in the air above the clouds, and for the first time in my life, I was higher than a rainbow. Rainbows are a Symbol of God’s promise to us after the flood. But it has come to represent The Promises of God, on the whole. In childhood, I would run outside to try to catch a glimpse of a rainbow, whenever it was raining with the sun out. I still do that today. I feel like God kissed me with that rainbow. The man in front of me on the plane, heard me exclaim, “It’s a rainbow! Look at the rainbow!” He peeked back at me and said, “You saw that, too!” “Yes, wasn’t it so cool,” I exclaimed in the same child-like wonder I would have over 40 years ago. God’s miracles never cease, they never diminish. Even though, we seem to grow weaker with age, His promises remain constant, immovable, faithful and true.
Blessed be the Lord,
Because He has heard the voice of my supplication.
7 The Lord is my strength and my shield;
My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped;
Therefore my heart exults,
And with my song I shall thank Him.
8 The Lord is their strength,
And He is a saving defense to His anointed.
9 Save Your people and bless Your inheritance;
Be their shepherd also, and carry them forever. (Psalm 28)
Yes, Dearest Lord; be my Shepherd and carry me forever. I need You to be the constancy that this life cannot be. I need You to be the faithfulness, that no one else can give. I need You to be just exactly who You are, God. I praise You that I can count on You and Your faithful promises. You make promises to us, but You keep them because of who You are, not because of who I am. I praise You, Lord, for the Rainbow you gave me this morning, a mere glimpse into Your forever-ness. Amen
