The Unfruitful deeds of darkness

I definitely had an “Aha” moment this morning.  I am an early riser, usually sometime between 3-5 a.m.  That’s just how my body clock works.  Don’t want to get up that early, I just am “ping,” awake that early.  Well, this morning, I was up even earlier, about 1:30.  I get a lot done at these hours, but I try to keep things very quiet, and do a lot in dim lighting in my room,  as I do not want to wake my Precious husband,  So I’m fumbling around in dim lighting this morning, trying to find my lotion for my feet.  I spot a container that looks just like it. I save my old containers and refill them, (growing up on a tight budget, I guess).  Anyhow, the container I grabbed was not my lotion, but my “modge-podge.”  In the dim lighting, I smeared it all over my feet, and couldn’t understand why I was having such a hard time getting my socks on.  You guessed it, what a mess.  I had to wake my husband any way, so he could get me a wet wash cloth, because I didn’t want to track my “mistake,” all over the wood floors in our room.  Too funny, right!  Even at 2 a.m., my husband was laughing at me, and so was I.

This is a humorous way to look at a very serious matter, the deeds that we do when no one else is around.  God is dealing with me in the area of food.  I am a “comfort food junkie.”  and have put on way too much weight over the last 28 years of my marriage.  My weakness is “night-time” eating.  God is really helping me deal with this “unfruitful deed of darkness.”  It is very unhealthy for me to carry around all this extra poundage.  Diets don’t work for me, because they make me think about food all the time.  So God is giving me step-by-step guidelines from Scripture, to help me make better choices.  It is slowly working for me.  There is no “fast-track” out of a bad habit.

Ephesians 5: 11-17

11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; 12 for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. 14 For this reason it says,

“Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.”

15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, 16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil. 17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

God loves me way too much, to let me stay in my destructive patterns.  I have been a believer a long time, but am still finding there is much work to do, much more room to continue growing and learning that  “His ways are higher than my ways.”  So, take heart, Believer, whatever God has “put the finger on” in your life right now, whatever the “unfruitful deed of darkness,” that You are struggling with; God can show you the way out.  The first step is to agree with Him in confession about the sin.  He only wants to free you and me, from what is holding us back from fully walking with Him.  May His light shine bright in your darkness and show you the way in which you should walk.  His love is perfecting love, encouraging love, never-ending love. Yield yourself to the correcting love of God.  It is a Wonderful thing to be loved by someone who wants to build you up and lead you in ways that will make you beautiful, in His time.
