A lonely candle

by: Carole L. Haines

14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)

I wonder how Mary felt, great with child, looking for a place to bring him forth

And Joseph, leading the donkey on, knocking on doors and crying out

“Does anyone have a place for us, safe and warm and light.

Joseph and Mary believed God, and He brought provision to them

But they had to seek, to take that first step out of comfort

They had to say, “Let it be done to me as the Lord says.”

They were lonely candles, single flames, come together to ignite the world

And Abraham who ventured from his country to follow God into a promised land

He didn’t know where he was going, but He knew whom He followed

He knew Jehovah Jireh, his provider and He believed Him

Sometimes I feel like that lonely candle, that single light, a flickering flame

My heart yearns for the warmth of a roaring fire, but I alone flicker here

Lord Jesus, You are the only one who can lift this candle and carry me

Bring me to the source of other lonely flames, many candles bring great light.

I am in company with Mary and Joseph, Abraham and Sarah

I need You, Lord, to lift me from this place and move me to where I belong.

Or bring others to my door, to my home, to this place to burn with me here

I am that lonely candle searching for Her place to set the world on fire
